Why You’ll Love Snorkeling at John Pennekamp

June 04, 2018

Located at the beginning of the Florida Keys is one of South Florida’s most valued treasures--John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, opened in 1963, it is the first undersea park in America. Sometimes you strike gold, and there is no reason to keep on searching. That’s how we feel about this vibrant gem brimming with tropical underwater life and located in Key Largo just minutes from the Drift Hotel. It’s as beautiful now as it was 55 years ago--snorkelers can enjoy 70 nautical miles of colorful coral reefs and visit the Christ of the Abyss, an eight and a half foot 4000-pound bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ that was installed in 1965. Home to over 250 species of tropical fish, it’s the third largest reef in America and snorkelers have been known to see tarpon and barracudas, alongside whimsical angelfish and midnight parrotfish. The variety is so robust and eye-catching you’ll spend the majority of your hour and a half snorkeling below the Atlantic Ocean waves.
